Hi everyone,

A friend of mine has had a refugee status for five years upto January 2012. He received his Indefinite Leave to Remain in April 2012. As the HO rules dictate he will apply for naturalization and citizenship after a year, that is in March 2013. The question is can he apply before the one year stay is exhausted? Can he apply now?

I would very much appreciate your input on this matter.

Regads,

Star2008.

I can't see how that would exempt him from the regulations.

Thank you very much for your prompt replies.

So there should be some compelling circumstance for him to have his application expedited by the HO? I completely understand that, but recently - I don't know how - another individual with similar situation was advised by his solicitor that he didn't need to wait the whole year (from the time he received his ILR) to apply for citizenship. It is a bit confusing. I did also phone the HO to clear this up, but they wouldn't give a definitive answer. A guy in the HO I spoke to on the phone said he wouldn't like to be quoted regarding this and instead advised me to check their web site.
