She is going back this early because a relative is sick. We don't know what the outcome of that will be but it seems sensitive to stay for family Xmas in the circumstances. Why would immigration not think she should be allowed to continue to visit ? How much help would it be if she had a return ticket with her ?

The thing is that she isn't really a visitor, is she? She's living with you. Her name is on the tenancy agreement. She doesn't have a job to go back to and doesn't really want to go back there. It is this that may make them think she isn't a visitor.

Sorry, you are wrong. Visitors to the UK are automatically granted 6 months leave regardless of the amount of time they say they are going to stay. It is permissible to change one's mind and stay longer than planned but this may impact future applications.
