My partner is a US citizen and under a Post Study Work Visa, we are getting married next autumn and both will acquire a 'new' surname that comprises of both surnames double barrelled.
He will be renewing his passport shortly after the honeymoon to reflect the name change.
Would we also need to update the name change in his biometric card (which is still valid for many months) straight after receiving the new passport or should we proceed to apply for spouse visa as I am assuming this will require his biometrics to be updated anyway?
I have tried looking for information on various websites but its rather disorganised and confusing so I'm hoping someone can clear this up for me?
Thank you

I can't see a problem with leaving the change of name on the card to the spouse visa application if you are going to apply as soon as the paso sort is back with the change.
I assume that you know you both need a deed poll to do this? Or, if your husband is canny and changes his name before you marry, you won't have to.

I didn't know we could only have a double barelled name through deed poll. I thought this was simply changed and accepted through a marriage certificate. Thank you for bring this to our attention Victoria.
If my husband to be was to change his surname via a USA version of deed poll surely this would mean he would have to update his US passport and biometric card immediately to reflect the surname change? And then update his biometric card again after receiving a spouse visa to reflect the permit change?
Would it be easier if I changed my surname by deed poll before marriage? Saves him from an extra application to fill in and pay.

No, because your name is changed automatically on marriage, not his.
Why would he get a US version of a deed poll? Is this what the US embassy have stated is needed to change his passport?
As I said, he can't change his biometric ID card until he's done his passport, and you'll apply for the spouse visa once that is changed so I see no point in changing the PSW card at all.
